Science Course Overview

Overview of Early Childhood:
Early Childhood Science: The science program in the preschool years, Beginners and Pre-Kindergarten, uses a multi-modal experiential approach. An inquiry based program, students are provided with hands-on projects where they “do” science to stimulate their natural curiosity. The program is designed to develop awareness through observation, a foundational skill for effective application of the scientific method, which is a focus throughout Lower School. Critical thinking skills naturally develop as children use their observations and growing knowledge to further their discussion and exploration of topics that include: seasonal change, our natural environment, wildlife and habitats. Science experiences take place in the most conducive environment whether in the classroom, the Science Lab, the Innovation Station or outside in the garden or elsewhere on the campus grounds! Student interest and questions may influence the direction of instructional experiences.

Kindergarten:
Science: In Kindergarten, science continues to be taught in the most conducive environment to support the topic being explored, whether in the classroom, the Science Lab, the Innovation Station, outside in the garden or elsewhere on the campus grounds. “Lab time” is incorporated into the schedule so that students “do” science providing the opportunity for the application of the Scientific Method. During this time, students develop the technical aspects of tools and procedures that help with science exploration. Questioning is encouraged and students learn safety rules, continuing to learn through a multisensory approach, as the curriculum includes topics such as: animal habitats, plant life and the solar system.
